Augmenting Family Income through Goat rearing

Sreema Debnath hailing from Bajendra Nagar village of Block Satchand in the district of South Tripura is a homemaker with a family of four. She has 2 daughters and her husband is a farmer. In order to augment her family income, she undertook goat farming starting with just one goat about nine years back. She came to know about improved goat rearing practices through Bakri Palak Pathshala back in the year 2016, when Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission launched goatery project in Tripura in association with The Goat Trust. The project aimed at capacity building of goat rearers through community training and field demonstration. For many willing goat rearers like Sreema, this was a golden opportunity to learn and earn later. She started with one goat but gradually increased the herd size. The Pashu Sakhies helped her buy mishran, pashu chat and masala bolus for goats. Improved feeding increased the body weight and birth weight of her goats. Participating in the health camp organised for livestock she even dewormed and vaccinated her goats. This would ensure reduced mortality of her goats leading to increased productivity to a great extent. Presently, she has three healthy goats, all dewormed and vaccinated. She sold four goats this year and earned Rs. 14000 from it. She has also started a saving bank account in a local post office branch to deposit all her earnings. Her family income has seen a significant rise through goat rearing activity and she is able to meet the monthly expenses associated with education of her children, expenses on goods and durables etc.
